A Dentist’s Guide to Oral Health

Oral Care Should Start Early

Do you know why cavities and gum disease continue to afflict people? One mistake we make is delaying dental care. When should you start caring for your teeth? According to studies, dental care begins even before the first tooth erupts. It’s a lifelong commitment that you need to incorporate into your lifestyle.

Besides preventive dental care, you must also see a dentist when you experience symptoms of oral problems like tooth pain and bleeding gums. Treating them early prevents complications. If you have kids, teach them the importance of brushing and flossing.

Keep Your Toothbrush Clean

After brushing your teeth, your next task is to ensure that no toothpaste and food debris is left on the bristles of your toothbrush.

All you need is to rinse it in warm water. You may have read online that placing your toothbrush in the microwave or under UV devices can remove bacteria and dirt, but the CDC does not recommend this since these appliances can destroy your toothbrush. To keep your toothbrush clean, dentists suggest you store it upright, and air dry it because bacteria can grow in it if it gets moist.

Don’t Brush Too Hard

Putting extra force on your toothbrush may seem like the right thing to do to keep your teeth clean, but dentists say it’s counterproductive. To avoid doing that, dentists recommend you don’t tighten your grip on your toothbrush handle because if you do so, you’ll be tempted to brush too hard, which can cause premature enamel erosion.

The most effective way to brush your teeth is to angle your toothbrush at 45 degrees toward your gum line and use soft, circular, and back-and-forth strokes. You don’t need extra force to clean your teeth. Your toothbrush bristles are enough.

The ADA recommends brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes. Make sure to pay special attention to your back teeth as they are more prone to plaque buildup.

Schedule an Appointment With Your Dentist Every Six Months

Dental care professionals encourage patients to visit the dentist at least once every six months. Even though your at-home oral care routine can help remove plaque, it cannot eliminate it, especially in hard-to-reach areas such as your back teeth.

It can happen if you do not use the proper technique or brush your teeth for more than 48 hours. Luckily, your dentist can remove all traces of plaque and tartar if you schedule routine teeth cleanings every six months.
