Mouth Guards

If you’re playing a sport, mouth guards are essential for protecting your teeth, ensuring they don’t get chipped or otherwise damaged. Let’s discuss who’s a good candidate for mouth guards and what you can expect when wearing them.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Mouth Guards?

Mouth guards protect your mouth from blunt force trauma. For this reason, the NFHS mandates them for young athletes playing:

  • Football
  • Field Hockey
  • Ice Hockey
  • Lacross
  • Wrestling (only if the athlete is wearing braces)

That said, they’re a good idea for any sport or physical activity where contact or collision can occur, including but not limited to:

  • Basketball
  • Horseback Riding
  • Rugby
  • Skateboarding

Please note that mouth guards are not designed to be worn at night. If you're looking for an oral appliance that can resolve overnight teeth grinding or sleep apnea, you may be a good candidate for night guards.

Living with Mouth Guards

These oral appliances significantly reduce the risk of fractures and other forms of tooth damage. If you get one from the dentist’s office, it should fit easily, not causing any pain. As opposed to the kind you can buy over the counter, we'll customize the mouth guard with your bite in mind.
